Intern, Economic Policy Program
Job Summary:
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grant-making institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues.
The Economic Policy Program of GMF seeks an energetic, detail-oriented, full-time intern to support an East Africa initiative focused on strengthening development cooperation and food security. The initiative will launch a Center of Excellence for Transformational Partnerships that will serve as a knowledge hub and scale up learning and the practice of public private partnerships that drive transformational change leading to sustainable development. It will aim to improve transatlantic and global development cooperation.
S/he should have an interest in strengthening innovative partnerships and market-oriented solutions to development. The position is open to qualified candidates who possess strong writing, organizational and logistical skills. This position offers the opportunity to engage and work directly with senior policy officials and experts from government, NGOs and business as well as practitioners in development.
This internship is unpaid and offers an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional experience for those interested in a career in international affairs and development. Our office is Metro-accessible, just blocks from Dupont Circle. GMF offers a stimulating, supportive work environment.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Assisting with policy meetings and staffing fellows;
- Assisting with coordinating events in Washington DC and Tanzania;
- Supporting on-going communications with project partners and networks;
- Supporting research on innovative development models and partnerships;
- Supporting report editing and writing;
- Providing administrative support; and
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Have excellent communication and writing skills.
- Be comfortable communicating with high level contacts within the network.
- Be creative, organized, self-directed and responsible.
- Have excellent organizational skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
- Possess solid research skills and ability to organize ideas clearly.
- Be comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
- Possess a background/interest in international development and Africa.
- Experience working on Africa issues a plus.
- Fluency in Swahili would also be a plus, but not required.
Start and Length of Internship:
Preferred starting date: January 2013
Preferred length of internship: January through May with the possibility to extend through September 2013, ideally commit at least 30 hours per week during the normal business hours (M-F 9-5), though a time accommodation may be made for a student if needed.
