Job Summary:

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grant-making institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues.

The Transatlantic Leadership Initiative (TLI) department of GMF seeks an energetic, detail-oriented, full-time intern to work on fellowship and alumni programs for emerging leaders from the United States and Europe. The programs include the Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF), Manfred Wörner Seminar (MWS), and Asmus Policy Entrepreneurs Fellowship, Marshall Forum on Global Leadership, and alumni programs targeting these groups.  Upcoming projects include the hosting of fellows in the U.S. and Europe, and the Marshall Forum. Other projects will arise.

Interest in the programs and priorities of the German Marshall Fund is essential.  The position is open to qualified candidates who possess strong writing and organizational skills, as well as an interest in transatlantic relations. 

This internship is unpaid and offers an ideal opportunity to acquire substantive professional and organizational experience for those interested in a career in public policy and foreign relations.  Our office is Metro-accessible, just blocks from Dupont Circle.  GMF offers a stimulating, supportive work environment. 

Key Areas of Responsibility:

• Assisting with organizing the hosting of fellows in the U.S.;
• Assisting with coordinating the alumni conference and events;
• Maintaining directory, database, and website;
• Providing administrative support to the TLI Staff;
• Facilitate the development of the Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network; and
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Have excellent communication and writing skills.
• Be comfortable communicating with high level contacts within the network.
• Be creative, organized, self-directed and responsible.
• Have excellent organizational skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
• Be comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
• Possess a background/interest in diplomacy, transatlantic relations, or fellowship programming.
• Have interest in the programs and priorities of the German Marshall Fund.
• Have knowledge of a European language, not essential, but beneficial.

Start and Length of Internship:

Preferred starting date: Early May 2013

Preferred length of internship: Until August 2013 with possibility to extend through Fall 2013; ideally commit at least 30 hours per week during the normal business hours (M-F 9-5), though a time accommodation may be made for a student if needed.
