Program Officer, Foreign & Security Policy


Job Summary:

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.

GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship. In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies.

Founded in 1972 as a non-partisan, non-profit organization through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has seven offices in Europe: Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, Bucharest, and Warsaw. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm.

The German Marshall Fund of the United States seeks a Program Officer for its Foreign & Security Policy Program (FSP).  This position offers an excellent opportunity to work in a non-partisan American public policy institution that promotes greater cooperation and understanding between the United States and Europe in the areas of foreign policy. 

 

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Managing the communication and coordination between  the Ankara, Berlin, Brussels, Belgrade, Bucharest, Paris, and Warsaw Offices;
  • Managing the events/conferences resource allocation in Washington, DC;
  • Assisting with GMF’s international signature events;
  • Assisting and supporting the FSP team in coordinating GMF’s Embassy outreach efforts in Washington, DC across various program areas; and
  • Assisting in managing foreign policy-related grantmaking efforts, including the financial and narrative report preparation.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Candidate pursing a Masters level degree related to International Relations or European Studies.
  • Have four to six years experience in a similar organization working on contemporary European and American public policy issues. 
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills combined with the ability to work well under deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Products).
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required; Proficiency in at least one European language is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally required.
