Development Officer
Job Summary:
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) strengthens transatlantic cooperation on regional, national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.
GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship. In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies.
Founded in 1972 as a non-partisan, non-profit organization through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has seven offices in Europe: Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, Bucharest, and Warsaw. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm.
GMF seeks a proactive and experienced development professional to join its Development and Partnerships team. The Development Officer will directly contribute toward the department’s goal of raising approximately $22 million annually toward GMF’s operating budget. S/he will have the opportunity to work in an international environment where nearly 70% of all revenue sources are from international constituencies.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop, implement, and manage strategies for U.S., international foundations, and government fundraising in coordination with the relevant program staff and the Vice President for Development and Partnerships;
- Responsible for raising funds for several areas of GMF’s policy programs, including but not limited to four of GMFs top priority programs: Urban and Regional Policy (includes major grants from the U.S. federal government); Mediterranean Policy; Wider Atlantic (which includes the organization’s largest financial partner); and Asia Policy;
- Research prospects; develop solicitation strategies; write, edit, and coordinate proposals; and work with program and financial teams to develop proposal budgets;
- Monitor overall relationships with foundation and government donors to ensure appropriate level of interaction;
- Act as a stewardship for GMF’s existing grants. Oversee reporting process, write and edit reports, work with program and financial staff to develop and review financial reports, and assures compliance with donor reporting requirements and deadlines;
- Work with team members to identify opportunities for donor visits and coordinate preparation of briefing materials;
- Provide ongoing guidance and feedback to program and senior staff to positively shape dialogue with foundation and government donors and prospects to include talking points for meetings, coaching on presentations, and other communications recommendations;
- Monitor trends in foundation giving and work with relevant program staff to integrate findings into foundation fundraising strategies;
- Work with the Development Assistant to track foundation and government activities and revenues using Raisers Edge. Update weekly foundation activity reports for the Development team, as well as other special reports as needed;
- Work with the Development Assistant to manage acknowledgement of contributions from donors to including grant contracts and related correspondence from GMF’s program and senior leadership; and
- Suggest, design, and implement special projects as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree with at least three years of foundation development experience is preferred.
- Six to eight years of professional experience in non-profit fundraising and a solid track record of fundraising accomplishments.
- General knowledge of global policy issues is preferred; expertise in German, Mediterranean, Urban, or Asia Policy is not required.
- Excellent written and oral English language skills and ability to communicate ideas persuasively; second language skills, preferably in French or German.
- Experience using development search tools and fundraising databases is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of non-profit fundraising, preferably in a highly complex environment within a non-profit or policy-oriented organization.
- Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Must be highly proficient with Word, Excel and PowerPoint and have experience using fundraising software.
- Successful experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
