GMF’s Bratislava office is its hub for activity in Central and Eastern Europe. Founded initially to work in the Visegrad countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary), Romania, and Bulgaria, its scope has gradually expanded further east, into the former Soviet Republics of Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine. Led by Pavol Demeš, the office was established in January 2000 as GMF’s second European office.

The office serves as the gateway to grantmaking in CEE countries, hosts and organizes conferences for leaders on democracy, security, and other regional issues, supports policy think tanks and non-governmental organizations, and works to support the democratic process in the region. It also organizes the CEE component of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program.
