2005 American Marshall Memorial Fellowship Seminar May 20, 2005 / Cleveland
The German Marshall Fund held its fifth annual American Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) Seminar May 20–22 in Cleveland, Ohio. Organized together with the Cleveland Conference Committee headed by 2003 MMF alumni Valarie McCall and Stephen Ong, the weekend saw vibrant policy analysis and discussion, and gave Fellows an opportunity to reconnect with each other and to the broader transatlantic debate. The two-and-a-half day conference began on Friday with a dinner event at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Keynote speaker Paulo Casaca, 1990 MMF alumnus and Portuguese member of the European Parliament, spoke about the changing role of NATO as Europe expands its borders and plays a greater role in addressing global challenges. Saturday’s program included panel discussions with American and European perspectives on a broad range of issues, including the second Bush administration, sustainable development, the role of the arts in community development, entrepreneurship in a global economy, and civil and human rights issues surrounding EU expansion. The conference ended on Sunday with a panel on the impact of trade on transatlantic relations. The final event featured a keynote address by Cleveland Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, who encouraged the Fellows to continue to expand their horizons through travel and exposure to new thoughts and ideas. Future American Marshall Memorial Fellowship Seminars will he held in Seattle in 2006, Atlanta in 2007, and Los Angeles in 2008.
