4th annual Transatlantic Journalists Forum June 02, 2005 / San Antonio

The German Marshall Fund, in cooperation with the European Commission, convened the fourth annual Transatlantic Journalists Forum (TJF) June 2–4, 2005, in San Antonio, Texas. The border state was chosen as a perfect location to discuss the theme “Borders, Neighborhoods, and Political Landscapes in Europe and North America.”   Over the course of two days, European and North American journalists covering immigration and border issues exchanged ideas and experiences, made new contacts, and debated the challenges they face in their respective countries and in their work.  As in years past, TJF provided participants with an opportunity to meet with high-level policymakers and experts from the United States and the European Union.   The topics addressed ranged from broader concepts of neighborhood and integration to political influence of immigrant communities to border management in Europe and the United States.  The Forum laid open many philosophical and policy differences across the Atlantic, but the discussions also highlighted the many similarities in practical challenges of integrating minority communities and creatively securing borders.  For the participating journalists, it was a rare opportunity to compare their immediate experiences with those of colleagues from the other side of the Atlantic, and sharpen their own analysis by putting the issues in a comparative and transatlantic context.   Participants were drawn from large and small news sources on both continents, and included journalists from such news outlets as CNN, Dallas Morning News, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, and New York Times on the North American side, and The Economist (UK), Le Figaro (France), Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Germany), and Novosti (Serbia).  The broad geographic diversity among the participants was conducive not only to spirited transatlantic debate, but also to regional comparisons.   The program featured vibrant discussions with Ambassador John Bruton, head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, DC, and former Irish prime minister; Jorge Castañeda, former foreign minister of Mexico; Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte; Member of the European Parliament Cem Özdemir; and Mario Villarreal, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Department of Homeland Security. The next Transatlantic Journalists Forum is planned for late spring 2006.
