6th Annual Transatlantic Conference for Young Leaders June 23, 2006 / Tremezzo, Italy

On June 23, GMF successfully concluded another Tremezzo Young Leaders’ Conference.  This year's conference was a confirmation of a "transatlantic pragmatic optimism," with a willingness to listen and discuss constructively.  The discussions focused on differences in the court of public opinion and how these can be addressed.   The three-day conference at Lake Como in Tremezzo, Italy, also included in-depth discussions on Iran, energy security and Russia, and immigration and demographics.  There was also a special dinner session on food and culture, for which the hotel created a regional seasonal menu.  Piercarlo Bussetti, a Michelin-starred chef from Torino, discussed how his deeply rooted cuisine was influenced by his experiences cooking in the U.S. and Japan.   Every year since 2001, the German Marshall Fund in cooperation with the Bertelsmann Foundation has convened the Transatlantic Conference for Young Leaders on the shores of Lake Como in Tremezzo, Italy.  The annual conference brings together promising European and American leaders under the age of 40 to discuss and debate the challenges facing the Euro–Atlantic community.  Participants come from a variety of professional backgrounds — including government, business, the media, and the think tank and NGO community — and develop lasting professional and personal connections on both sides of the Atlantic.
