President Obama announced plans for a free trade agreement between the US and Europe during his annual State of the Union address, Tuesday evening. The U.S. president told Congress he will start a “comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership with the European Union, because trade that is fair and free across the Atlantic supports millions of good-paying American jobs.”
GMF publication, A New Era for Transatlantic Trade Leadership, calls for the creation of a barrier-free transatlantic market as part of ambitious, realistic recommendations for a new U.S.-EU trade and investment agenda to promote economic growth, jobs and economic development.
The Transatlantic Task Force on Trade and Investment proposes that deeper bilateral transatlantic economic integration is essential for recovery from the current economic crisis. Together, the EU and the U.S. can exercise the leadership required to kick-start global trade liberalization, strengthening the multilateral trading system embodied in the World Trade Organization (WTO).
