A new transatlantic partnership with Pakistan June 29, 2009 / Paris, France
On June 29, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) organized a roundtable discussion in Paris on ‘A new transatlantic partnership with Pakistan'. The day-long seminar brought together 35 senior experts from the transatlantic policymaking and think-tank community, as well as senior Pakistani officials, opinion makers, and politicians.
The main goal of the seminar was to help develop transatlantic solutions for promoting security and democratic development in Pakistan. Strategic objectives for Pakistan are as important as winning the war in neighbouring Afghanistan. The upcoming Swedish EU Presidency, combined with the current crisis situation in the country, create the opportunity to forge a new transatlantic compact with a democratic Pakistan.
To contribute towards the development of a policy framework and a concrete agenda towards this end, the seminar covered relevant topics such as the effectiveness of foreign assistance to Pakistan, the current humanitarian crisis as a result of the army's surge into the Swat valley, Western assistance to the security forces, police and judiciary, and comprehensive strategies to strengthen civilian institutions.
