American Marshall Memorial Fellowship program celebrates its 10th anniversary on Capitol Hill March 05, 2009 / Washington, DC
On March 5, the German Marshall Fund (GMF) hosted a reception on Capitol Hill celebrating the tenth anniversary of the American Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) program. More than 100 MMFs, alumni, GMF staff, former GMF staff, embassy representatives and assorted friends of the German Marshall Fund and the MMF program attended. Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-MN), who participated as an AMMF, delivered a speech about his experience.
Ellen Pope, who began the AMMF program back in 1999, led off the formal portion of the program with a few remarks about the founding of the AMMF program and acknowledged former GMF staff members Steve Grand and Krystyna Wolniakowski, both of whom were in attendance. She then introduced Richard Gibson, Seth Hurwitz, and Jim Polsfut, three members of the inaugural (1999) AMMF class in attendance, who were presented with a small plaque commemorating their program.
Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, GMF Senior Director for Policy Programs, introduced the keynote speaker for the evening, Congressman Erik Paulsen (AMMF 2007). Congressman Paulsen spoke about the MMF program opening his eyes to new issues and new perspectives and how it has made him a better legislator and representative. He offered advice to the Fellows who are about to embark on the program.
