Basescu: Romania is committed to strengthing partnership with United States July 27, 2006 / Washington, DC

On July 27, GMF's Washington office organized a dinner for Romanian President Traian Basescu to discuss U.S.-Romanian relations. The dinner was hosted by Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR) and attended by Senator Bob Bennett (R-UT) and Senator George Voinovich (R-OH).

President Basescu said Romania is committed to strengthening the strategic partnership with the United States, especially in the areas of economics and trade relations, urging a boost in American investment in Romania.

He also added that Romania is committed to the transformation of NATO and believes that an open door policy must be maintained for the admittance of future member states. Romania supports the advancement of NATO enlargement to new democracies in the Balkans and the Black Sea region.

Earlier during the day, while meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush, President Basescu touched upon the recent resolution concerning Romania's ban on inter-country adoptions and the welfare of orphaned or abandoned children in Romania. He also talked about U.S. visa requirements for Eastern European countries, urging the United States drop visa requirements for Romanian citizens traveling to the United States. Bush reacted saying the United States is willing to work on a visa policy that not only works for Romania, but other countries, as well.

President Basescu reassured President Bush that Romania will maintain its troop presence in Afghanistan and Iraq, continuing its commitment to the "War on Terror" supplying 1,400 soldiers between Iraq and the Balkans, in addition to the 700 peacekeeping troops in Afghanistan. As a result of an agreement achieved late last year between Romania and the United States, the United States will soon establish several military facilities within Romanian territory.
