Belarusian activists give first-hand account of government crackdown February 22, 2011 / Washington, DC
On Wednesday, February 16, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), in cooperation with Freedom House, the Foreign Policy Initiative, the National Democratic Institute, and the International Republican Institute, hosted a panel discussion featuring Voices from Belarus – a group of seven Belarusian citizens, civic activists, and political figures. The panel offered first-hand testimonials of the post-electoral crackdown and the tightening grip of the Lukashenko regime. Discussants included:
Dr. Irina Bogdanova, sister of jailed presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov
Eva Neklayaeva, daughter of jailed presidential candidate Vladimir Neklayev
Alekander Kozulin, former candidate for president of Belarus
Alaksiej Janukievich, leader of the Belarusian Popular Front party
Dzianis Sadoukis, manager of the Belarusian Christian Democrats
Yulia Slutskaya, former editor of Kamsamolskaya Prauda u Belarusi
Dmitri Makarov, leader of Russia’s Youth Human Rights Movement
The panel, who was in Washington to argue for continued pressure on the Lukashenko regime, brought a unique array of perspectives on the situation in Belarus. In particular, they discussed how actions in the West are more likely to have an impact in the beleaguered European country and on the prospects for change in Belarus.
