Beyond the Euro Crisis: Implications for U.S. Strategy October 04, 2012 / Aaron Friedberg
If the present crisis in the euro results in an economic implosion, Europe could drag others down with it, making it more difficult for the United States to generate the resources necessary to meet other pressing geopolitical challenges. Even if it avoids the worst, Europe as a whole seems unlikely for some time to come to have either the inclination or the energy to do more than just cope as best it can with its own problems. This paper identifies a range of plausible scenarios for the further unfolding of the euro crisis — a stronger union, disintegration, and “muddling through — and considers their implications for U.S. strategy.
