Bryza Launches Ankara Speakers’ Series August 25, 2005 / Ankara
In GMF’s inaugural Mott Speakers’ Series luncheon in Ankara, Matt Bryza, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, touched upon Turkish-American relations, Cyprus, Iraq, the PKK, and Turkey’s EU drive in an address to members of the Ankara policy community. On August 25, Bryza said success in dealing with the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) would come if the party’s media outlets and financial assistance sources in Europe were effectively shut down. He added that Iraqis were not yet ready to deal militarily with the PKK. "Fighting the PKK presence in northern Iraq is, for Turkey, a matter of priority. But for the Iraqis, who have fires all over the country, it is not a priority matter," he said.
Talking about Turkey's potential future in the EU, Bryza said EU member states should focus on the strategic advantages of a Europe-oriented Turkey. "So we [the United States] need to be engaged with all those states to help keep them focused on the grand strategic prize of Turkey's being anchored in Europe and not being diverted onto a tactical path that can cause real significant long-term damage including, if not handled correctly, undermining the prospects for a Cyprus settlement."
The luncheon was made possible through a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and the speakers’ series is designed to build networks of scholars, analysts, and journalists interested in Turkey; create stronger ties between Turkey, the EU, and the United States; and provide support to the civil society of Turkey.
