Deputy Finance Minister provides German perspective on solutions to the Eurozone crisis August 01, 2011 / Washington, DC
On July 26, GMF hosted Steffen Kampeter, Parliamentary State Secretary/Deputy Finance Minister in the German Ministry of Finance, for a lunch event titled Germany and the Eurozone Crisis: The View from Berlin, the most recent discussion in GMF’s Strengthening the Transatlantic Economy event series.
With the European sovereign debt crisis occupying economic and political headlines in Europe over the summer, developments in Greece and renewed worries about the situation in Italy and Spain have added new urgency to the search for potential solutions. As the biggest economy in Europe, Germany stands at the center of the debate on the future of the eurozone.
In his remarks, Mr. Kampeter addressed questions regarding the current situation in the monetary union and Germany’s leadership role during the crisis. A special emphasis was also placed on the political significance of the common currency for the European project and the importance of improved competitiveness in order to promote long-term economic growth within the European Union.
