Deputy Head of European Central Bank gives new perspective on eurozone debt crisis November 18, 2011 / Washington, DC

On November 14, GMF hosted Gabriel Glöckler, Deputy Head of the EU Institutions Division at the European Central Bank, for a roundtable discussion on “Understanding the Dynamics of the Eurozone Debt Crisis: The view from the European Central Bank.”

At the roundtable discussion, Mr. Glöckler offered insights into the dynamics of the sovereign debt crisis and the interrelation between markets and policy, focusing on the perception – and misperceptions – of the crisis response among markets and policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic. Given from the perspective of a policymaking institution that has found itself in the middle of the crisis, Mr. Glöckler outlined potential steps going forward and addressed many of the questions being raised about the permanence of a single currency system. The event followed a similar discussion GMF hosted with Mr. Glöckler in March, providing a unique opportunity to look back at the developments of the past months and assess steps taken by the European Central Bank and other actors.
