Developments in Turkey
April 07, 2011
Hosted by MEP Marietje Schaake
Turkey's increased activism and soft power in the Middle East, concerns about freedoms in Turkey, coupled with the demands for democracy across the region, have sparked an intense debate:
Can Turkey contribute to the outreach of the United States and the European Union in the Middle East and North Africa or is there a clash between approaches of Turkey and the Transatlantic bloc towards this region? Will the answer to this question determine whether Turkey's democracy deficits are once again "tolerated" by the West because of its strategic value? Can Turkey be a model for the Muslim Middle East? In Turkey's relations with the EU, where can the current political brinkmanship and public support deficits lead to? Is Europeanization an added value or a liability for Turkey's soft power in the Middle East?
Speakers:
Marietje Schaake, Member of the European Parliament representing Democrats 66/ALDE
Ian Lesser, Senior Transatlantic Fellow, German Marshall Fund of the United States
Kadri Gürsel, Columnist, Milliyet newspaper
