Sometime in the next decade or so, Arizona will join California and a growing number of other states as a "majority/minority" state -- that is, a state where the majority of the population is composed of minority groups. For Arizona, that means primarily Hispanics and Native Americans, with smaller minority populations of African-Americans, Asians, and Pacific Islanders. Meanwhile, the next decade will also see a significant shift of economic influence to Asia with spillover effects on our neighbor to the south, Mexico.

The convergence of this economic trend with the demographic one means Arizona will need to rethink its approach to both trade and immigration. With our own universities under increasing financial pressures, the likelihood that we will be able to produce the number of graduates with the necessary skills for the 21st century is unlikely.
