European Marshall Memorial Fellows meet American government officials and policymakers June 14, 2010 /

From June 14 – July 7, 18 emerging European leaders traveled extensively throughout the United States for 24 days with the Marshall Memorial Fellowship program (MMF). Participants came from 14 countries, from Portugal to Poland, and included a member of the Rotterdam city council, the vice president for KBC Security Corporate Finance, the former Hungarian under secretary of state for foreign and security policy, and the vice director of the Onassis Cultural Center.

The Fellows spent six days in Washington where they met with Congressman Alcee Hastings, visited the Phillips Collection, and heard from former White House Counsel and GMF trustee Greg Craig. After their time in the nation’s capital, the Fellows were divided into smaller groups for a home stay experience in a southern town or on a Midwestern farm (Billings, MT; Chattanooga, TN; Pierre, SD; Wilmington, NC) and to visit a major metropolitan city (Atlanta, Boston, San Diego and Los Angeles). The groups then went to a mid-sized city (Charlotte, NC; Cleveland, OH; Portland, OR) before reuniting in New York, NY.

Over the course of the three-week program, the Fellows met with government officials, policymakers, academics, think tank leaders, business representatives, and civil society advocates to gain a better understanding of transatlantic and domestic issues through local, regional, and national perspectives. Subjects covered included religion, crime and justice, economic development, and volunteerism. Whenever possible, current Fellows connected with American alumni of the program to foster relationships and strengthen the network of young transatlantic leaders created by the program.

The MMF program is a group program that delves into the inner workings of American society through briefings, site visits, and experiential learning opportunities. The summer Fellowship program included meetings and activities such as a meeting with Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, lunch at the Harvard Faculty Club with a professor, a meeting with Congressman Dennis Kucinich, a visit to the Otay Mesa port of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border, a tour of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and participation in a Plains Indian Museum Powwow. In each city stop, individual appointments were arranged for Fellows according to their professional interests to facilitate the sharing of best practices across the Atlantic.

GMF thanks its American city coordinators whose knowledge and dedication greatly contribute to the continued success of the MMF program.
