At a packed public meeting in Brussels on July 17, European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas and European Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel pledged their support for more transparency in the Common Agricultural Policy and applauded the work of the farmsubsidy.org network. The Commission is currently consulting on the proposal in its green paper on transparency that there be full disclosure of the end-recipients of all EU funds.
The audience also heard from members of the farmsubsidy.org network. Pierre Boulanger and Professor Patrick Messerlin of La Groupe D'Economie Mondiale in Paris presented the story of their ongoing struggle to obtain data on farm subsidies in France. Tanja Draeger de Teran of WWF Germany spoke on behalf of a more than 30-strong alliance of environmental, animal welfare, and development NGOs who are seeking more transparency in Germany.
In the second session, farmsubsidy.org co-founder Nils Mulvad spoke about the problems that he has faced relating to the highly variable quality, detail, and accuracy of data so far obtained. Brigitte Alfter presented the latest news of her long-runnning EU-wide case that is now before the European Commission Ombudsman. Andrzej Krajewski gave an update on the Polish legal case and shared his reflections as a seasoned investigative journalist. The meeting was moderated by Jack Thurston, Transatlantic Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the United States and a co-founder of farmsubsidy.org.
