Fourth Trilateral Strategy Group convenes in Istanbul June 30, 2011 / Istanbul, Turkey
On May 25-27, 2011, GMF convened the fourth meeting of the Trilateral Strategy Group in Istanbul. The Group meets twice a year and brings together 50-60 Turkish, European, and American leaders to discuss a range of regional and global issues.
The Trilateral Strategy Group is organized by GMF in partnership with TUSIAD (the Turkish Business and Industry Association), Koc Holding, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden. The aim is to encourage a lively transatlantic dialogue “with Turkey, but not always about Turkey.” Meetings of the Group rotate among Turkish, American, and European venues.
The meeting, which was held under Chatham House rules, began with a reception and dinner at the recently restored Swedish Palace hosted by Consul General Torkel Stiernlof. Umit Boyner, President of the TUSIAD Board, opened the first day of discussion.
The day and a half meeting took up the general theme of Trilateral Perspectives on Power and Prosperity, and featured in-depth discussions on global demographics, migration and integration, emerging powers and global governance, and the sweeping changes in Turkey’s neighborhood. Foreign Minister Carl Bildt of Sweden participated in the meeting and led a conversation on the revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa.
