On December 11, GMF organized a small roundtable discussion at the Italian Embassy with the president of
Italy, Giorgio Napolitano, who was accompanied by Massimo D'Alema, the Italian foreign minister. The meeting was moderated by GMF President Craig Kennedy and participants included several GMF board members as well as senior analysts.
The discussion covered a range of issues on the transatlantic agenda such as Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, the future of the EU, and U.S.-EU relations. President Napolitano showed himself to have a strong understanding of these issues and commitment to US-European relations. Foreign Minister D'Alema also participated in the discussion, firmly stating his view that transatlantic relations had improved markedly over the past several years and stressing that it was vital for the U.S. and the EU to continue working together on many issues such as Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Iran.
