GMF journalism fellow presents book on American values June 01, 2006 / Washington, DC
On June 1, National Journal columnist and GMF Journalism Fellow Bruce Stokes presented his book America Against the World: How We Are Different and Why We Are Disliked along with co-author Andrew Kohut at a luncheon held by GMF's Washington office. The book is the result of an extensive survey that polled more than 90,000 people from 50 nations around the globe. The raw data from the survey illustrates dislike toward America, but both Kohut and Stokes explain how Americans are misunderstood. After the presentation, Stokes engaged in lively discussion with Die Zeit columnist Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, as well as other participants on hand at the event. The topics dealt with American values and differences. Stokes distinguished between enduring disparities that are unlikely to change, conditional differences with passing administrations, and differences derived from misunderstandings. Among the participants were the Ambassadors of Sweden and Slovakia, representatives from European embassies, and other Washington, DC-based transatlantic institutes.
