GMF Speaker Tour “Transatlantic Responses to China’s role in Africa” June 11, 2007 / Europe
GMF organized a small speaker tour with Ambassador David Shinn, former US Ambassador to Ethiopia, whose State Department career was mostly focused in East Africa and the Horn, and Christopher Fomunyoh, from Cameroon, who is the Director for West and Central Africa at NDI. They were joined in Paris by Francois Godement, President of the Asia Centre, who also chaired the event; in Brussels by Andrew Nathan, the prominent Sinologist from Columbia University; and in London by Deborah Brautigam, a specialist on Chinese aid policy from American University. In London, GMF partnered with DATA (Debt Aids Trade Africa), Bono's policy and advocacy NGO. The three-city tour was a good chance to plant the transatlantic seed, to get perspectives on how the issue was being seen in the different capitals, and to reach out to a lot of the key people who are involved in dealing with or thinking about it.
