On October 9, Jean-David Levitte, French Ambassador to the United States, awarded GMF Senior Transatlantic Fellow Dr. Ulrike Guérot with the France's National Order of Merit at the French Embassy in Washington, DC. She becomes the second GMF staff member accorded the honor by the French government this year.
Dr. Guérot received the National Order of Merit for her outstanding work on Franco-German relations and European Integration. Also recognized were her efforts to improve understanding between France and Germany on one side, and Europe and the United States on the other. On September 25, 2006, the award was also given to Ivan Vejvoda at the French Embassy in Belgrade. Mr. Vejvoda, executive director of GMF's Balkan Trust for Democracy in Belgrade, was presented with the order of "Officer."
The Award, founded in 1963 by Charles de Gaulle, is awarded to French nationals for distinguished civil and military achievements. Foreigners are not formally admitted into the Order as such, but receive the insignia as a sign of respect.
