GMF’s Pavol Demes honored for support of democracy and non-governmental organizations in Ukraine

The Ukrainian youth movement PORA (“It’s Time”), which was a major force in the Orange Revolution, awarded GMF’s Central and Eastern Europe Director Pavol Demeš with a plaque for his support for democracy and non-governmental organizations in the recent Ukraine elections. Mr. Demeš was the only foreign individual to receive such an honor from the campaign, during PORA’s closing ceremony on January 29, 2004 (http://pora.org.ua/en/).
PORA is a nationwide youth movement created to assert the free and democratic development of Ukraine. It has acted as a self-governing action platform formed by Ukrainian citizens and comprising thousands of volunteers, particularly students, all over the country. It accompanied the presidential elections with activities to educate voters, monitor campaigns and the electoral process, mobilize citizens to participate in the elections, and protect the legitimacy of their results.
An internationally recognized NGO leader, Pavol Demeš has served, as director of the German Marshall Fund’s Bratislava office since 2000. Before joining GMF, Mr. Demeš was executive director of the Slovak Academic Information Agency–Service Center for Third Sector, . He has been involved in peaceful democratic changes in Slovakia in 1998, in Serbia in 2000 and Ukraine in 2004.
He has been awarded the EU–U.S. Democracy and Civil Society Award in 1998 by President Clinton, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and European Commission President Jacques Santer; the USAID Democracy and Governance Award in 1999; and the Democracy and Civil Society Award by Serbian NGOs in 2000.
