Green Energy Peer Exchange Connects Detroit and Torino Leaders March 27, 2013 / Detroit, Michigan

From March 10-14, the Urban and Regional Policy Program of the German Marshall Fund hosted a peer exchange as part of the Detroit –Torino Partnership. The Detroit-Torino Partnership, a 3-year initiative funded by the Kresge Foundation, is designed to expose leaders from the city of Detroit to the lessons learned from Torino, Italy’s economic rebirth and industrial renaissance over the past three decades, and to foster transatlantic dialogues in support of the continued revitalization of both cities. The peer exchange focused on informing the development of the Energy Center Piemonte (EC), a new energy research and development incubator facility in Torino.
The Energy Center Piemonte, which is one aspect of a regional green energy strategy, will feature fully equipped spaces for research activities and laboratories for testing innovative technologies. It will act as an incubator of innovative enterprises, linked with the Politecnico di Torino’s I3P Incubator's activities. The EC will be developed adjacent to the Cittadella Politecnica, the Politecnico di Torino research campus, on the site of a former industrial building.
The exchange connected a delegation of stakeholders from Torino charged with the development of the EC to their peers engaged in related activities in the Detroit region. It addressed critical issues around the operation of the facility, including the business model, possible public private partnerships, and business attraction strategies.
To begin to address these issues and facilitate a critical dialogue, leaders from Torino visited sites in the Midtown area of Detroit, including NextEnergy, TechTown, Wayne State University, and the Henry Ford Innovation Institute, in addition to other points of interest throughout the city. The exchange set the groundwork for continued collaboration between the two cities within this policy sphere.
