Historic evening in Athens commemorates Marshall Plan’s 60th anniversary March 21, 2007 / Athens, Greece



On March 21, The German Marshall Fund and the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) hosted an evening at the Kranidiotis amphitheatre of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs to mark the 60th anniversary of the Marshall Plan and the 25th anniversary of the Marshall Memorial Fellowship Program.

A panel discussion, "The Marshall Plan, Sixty Years On: Would a New Peace-building Plan Work?," explored the history of the Marshall Plan and particularly its impact in Greece. Introductory remarks were given by the executive director of the Balkan Trust for Democracy, Ivan Vejvoda. Discussions on current global challenges were led by GMF Senior Transatlantic Fellow, Ian Lesser, with other speakers including Fotini Tomai, director of the service of diplomatic archives at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Konstantina Botsiou from the University of Athens, Thanos Dokos, the director general of ELIAMEP, with Minos Zombanakis, a member of ELIAMEP's Board of Directors moderating. A broad and candid question-and-answer session followed.

Attendance was strong with the United States Ambassador to Greece and many of his colleagues, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, students, and current American Marshall Memorial Fellows and former Greek Marshall Memorial Fellows.
