How China Will Change the Way We Think: The Case of the State February 04, 2011 / Martin Jacques


The relationship between the state and society in China is very different from that in the West. And the consequences are profound. In the West, at least in the postwar period, we have come to see the legitimacy of the state as overwhelmingly a function of and dependent upon democracy. The Chinese model confounds this logic. In Western terms, there is an absence of democracy in China and yet the state enjoys great legitimacy. This paper explores the reasons for this legitimacy and its implications on relations with the West.
