Impacts of global migration discussed May 16, 2006 / Berlin
In the light of recent debates about migration and intergration, such as President George W. Bush's recent televised address to the United States, on May 16, the German Marshall Fund's Berlin Office brought together a select group of experts from Europe and the United States to discuss the economic and social impacts of global migration. GMF was joined in hosting the event by Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the International Organisation for Migration, and the event was a follow-up event to one held last year. Based on the recommendations of the Global Commission on International Migration, which leads up to the UN High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development in September 2006, the debate focused on how global and national mechanisms for regulating immigration and integration can be efficiently implemented. The meeting accomplished one goal of helping to revitalize the German debate on the economic dimensions of migration. Click here for a protocol of the proceedings.
