Implications of Gas Discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean July 13, 2012 / Capitol Visitor Center

On Wednesday, July 11th, The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) hosted a briefing between Members of Congress and an expert panel on the implications of gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean at the U.S. Capitol. The panel, chaired by Congressmen John Sarbanes and Gus Bilirakis, was comprised of Sir Michael Leigh, consultant and senior advisor to The German Marshall Fund, J. Robinson West, Chairman of the Board and Founder of PFC Energy, Simon Henderson, Baker fellow and director of the Gulf and Energy Policy Program at The Washington Institute, and Toula Onoufriou, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of the Cyprus University of Technology. The discussion centered on the geopolitical implications of the recent discovery of significant natural gas resources in the Eastern Mediterranean. The panel of experts, whose professional expertise helped analyze various aspects of this discovery, examined the potential impact of this finding through the lens of the various actors in the region. The conversation also focused on the economic, political, and environmental impacts of this discovery and how this could affect international affairs moving forward. In addition, the panel discussed the implications for American interests in the region, both economic and political. This event provided an opportunity for members of Congress and their staff to engage in a conversation with the panelists on this issue which is sure to impact the current state of affairs in the region.
