Integration through education: What works best? June 26, 2006 / Berlin
On June 26, GMF’s Berlin office organized a workshop entitled “Integration through education: What works best?” to talk about youth, schools, and labor issues. The workshop was held in partnership with State Minister Maria Böhmer, German Federal Commissioner for Migration, and the Hertie Foundation. The event was held in the banquet hall of the Federal Chancellery. In addition to Böhmer, the participants included Armin Laschet, the Integration Minister of North Rhine Westphalia, Klaus Böger, the Education Minister of the Berlin Senate, representatives of the leading foundations in Germany, as well as school headmasters, migrants’ organisations, trade unions, and employers’ unions.
Foundations and schools presented examples of how to assist migrant youth in pre-school, school career, and the transition between school and labor market. The conference was conducted in German, as the findings of the workshop will directly feed into the working group on education of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s “Integration Summit” on July 14, 2006.
After the meeting, a 90-minute press briefing with Prof. Böhmer, the Hertie Foundation, and GMF was organized in the Federal Chancellery and attracted a dozen representatives from leading German media. After the conference, State Minister Böhmer said that she would like to do a follow-up with a similar format later in the year.
