International Seminar on Mediterranean and Transatlantic Cooperation June 21, 2010 / Paris, France
On June 21 2010, GMF, in collaboration with the Italian think tank Italianieuropei (Rome), organized a full-day international seminar in Paris on the topic of Mediterranean and transatlantic cooperation. The conference addressed a range of issues facing the Mediterranean region, including the last French initiative, the Union for the Mediterranean (motivations, public presentation, structure, financing, proposed projects, and challenges beyond the Barcelona process), the role of transatlantic relations in the success of the Union, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and Turkey's new role in the region. The seminar was made possible by the financial support of GMF’s Mediterranean program, led by Dr. Ian Lesser.The conference's 40 participants, including Former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema (Chairman ofItalianieuropei), Henri Guaino (special adviser to President Sarkozy), Serge Telle (Ambassador in Charge of the Union for the Mediterranean), Charles Milhaud (Chairman of the Task force to examine co-financing in the region and former Chairman of the Caisse nationale des Caisses d’Epargne), Prof. Bichara Khader (Director of the Contemporary Arab World Study Center at the Catholic University of Louvain), Samir Aïta (Chairman of the Cercle des Economistes Arabes), Franco Zallio (Senior Consultant on Middle East and Mediterranean issues), Javier Albarracin (Head of Socioeconomic Development at the European Institute of the Mediterranean, Barcelona), Khaled Fouad Allam (Professor of Sociology of the Muslim World at the University of Trieste and former Member of the Italian Parliament), Jean-Marie Paintendre (Diplomatic advisor at the Mediterranean World economic foresight institute, IPEMED), and Italian and Egyptian Ambassadors to France among others key experts, engaged in an in-depth dialogue on Mediterranean issues.
Guest speakers stressed that cooperation between Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East is essential to ensure economic growth and peace in the Mediterranean region, and that the transatlantic relationship is equally as necessary in boosting initiatives like the Union for the Mediterranean, whose infrastructure and tourism projects have already succeeded.
