Ivan Vejvoda testifies on Western Balkans before U.S. Senate subcommittee April 15, 2010 / Washington, DC
On April 14, Balkan Trust for Democracy Executive Director Ivan Vejvoda testified on the state of the Western Balkans before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Affairs. The hearing, "Unfinished Business in Southeast Europe: Opportunities and Challenges in the Western Balkans," was attended by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Senator George Voinovich (R-OH), and Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), as well as all ambassadors from the Western Balkans.
In his introduction, Vejvoda emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation between the United States and the Balkans and noted that the EU and United States' past support has been integral to the area's continuing stabilization and democratization. He went on to discuss the importance of EU integration, NATO enlargement, and recent developments in regional cooperation between Balkan countries. He concluded his presentation by outlining some of the remaining challenges to the area and reemphasized the need for a strong transatlantic partnership for future success.
