Lugar Institute Congressional Welcome Dinner with the Washington Diplomatic Community January 23, 2013 / Washington DC

On Wednesday, January 23, GMF’s Richard G. Lugar Institute for Diplomacy and Congress hosted a reception and dinner at the U.S. Botanical Gardens honoring the freshman congressional class. The event brought together ten newly-elected House and Senate members and thirty ambassadors from around the world. Other distinguished guests included former members of Congress and business leaders. After a welcome by GMF President Craig Kennedy, Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post Editorial Board took over as Master of Ceremonies. Senator Richard Lugar gave introductory remarks, followed by a keynote address by John Harris, Editor in Chief of Politico. The discussion underscored the need for sustained and constructive dialogue both between political parties as well as Congress and the diplomatic community.
