Moldovan Foreign Minister calls for robust partnership with U.S. December 15, 2006 / Washington, DC
On Friday, December 15, GMF hosted a luncheon for the Deputy Prime Minister and Minster of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, Andrei Stratan and David J. Kramer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs to discuss the U.S.-Moldovan relationship. Attendees included groups from the think tank and European diplomatic corps communities.
In his remarks, Minister Stratan outlined Moldova's policy of "western orientation," emphasizing the implementation of the policies and practices spelled out in Moldova's EU Action Plan, the establishment of a more robust strategic partnership between Moldova and the United States, and the promotion of strong political and economic ties among the littoral states of the Black Sea region.
David J. Kramer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs, responded to Minister Stratan's presentation with encouragement for Moldova on its current path of economic, social, and political reform, and touched briefly on the unhelpful role that Russia plays in the region. The question and answer session picked up where Mr. Kramer left off, with participants pressing both panelists to explain their respective countries' strategies toward engaging Moscow and solving the frozen conflict in Transdnestria.
