New perspective on most important aspects of food security in Africa December 09, 2010 / Washington, DC

On December 1, 2010, the German Marshall Fund hosted a public lunch event on Supporting Trade for Food Security: Lessons for Transatlantic Partners in Trade Facilitation, Food Security and African Regional Integration. Presentations from Paul Guenette of ACDI/VOCA, Charles Kunaka of the World Bank, and Jon Walden of Crown Agents were followed by an in-depth discussion with participants, moderated by Katrin Kuhlmann of The Aspen Institute.

While many discussions on food security have traditionally focused on increasing food production, this conversation continued the exploration of a theme central to GMF’s work on food security: the importance of trade and markets for spurring that production and delivering increased food and incomes. In order to encourage trade for food security in Africa, certain key areas must be addressed. This includes customs processes -- the traditional heart of trade facilitation efforts – as well as transportation, a variety of international regulations, supply chain security, and regional integration.
