Phil Gordon examines 2010 Transatlantic Trends data September 15, 2010 / Washington, DC
On September 15, the German Marshall Fund launched the Transatlantic Trends survey 2010. In Washington, Karen Donfried, GMF Executive Vice President, welcomed attendees and the findings were presented by Zsolt Nyiri, Director of Transatlantic Trends. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Phil Gordon, responded to the data and covered each of the main topics from the presentation. This year’s presentation focused upon the complexities of Obama’s popularity in Europe, attitudes toward the economic benefits of the EU and the euro, key transatlantic foreign and security policy challenges, differing transatlantic views on the rise of Asia, and Turkey’s changing relationship with the West. A lively question and answer session about the broader policy implications of the survey’s results followed the event. Questions addressed topics ranging from Russia’s role in the transatlantic relationship and NATO’s strategic concept to recovery from the economic crisis to Turkey’s relationship with the West.
