Polish Under Secretary Leads Discussion on Energy Security in Eastern Europe October 31, 2011 / Washington, DC
On October 28, The German Marshall Fund of the United States hosted an off-the-record conversation with Minister Jerzy Pomianowski, Under Secretary of State at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a roundtable discussion on the EU’s Eastern Partnership. The high-profile event highlighted issues regarding Poland and its relationship with neighboring countries Ukraine and Belarus, as well as the EU. The roundtable discussion focused on how the Polish government juggles its relation with the Belarusian government and Belarusian democratic activists, as well as on energy security in the region. In light of the recent arrest of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and neighboring countries planning on building nuclear power plants, the roundtable agreed that the language of discourse on energy security policy will change in the near future, as European solidarity increases.
