Press briefing ahead of Obama’s trip to Europe

On March 27, GMF held a briefing for reporters in Washington, DC, on President Barack Obama's trip to Euorpe on April 1. Obama will travel to Europe for the first time as President of the United States to attend the G20 Summit, the NATO Summit, and for a presidential visit to Turkey.
The German Marshall Fund, focused on transatlantic relations and issues with seven European offices, is uniquely positioned to brief reporters making the trip to Europe on what Obama can expect Europeans to ask of him. GMF experts follow transatlantic relations closely, particularly regarding the economy, security and NATO, and relations with Turkey.

EXPERTS WHO COMMENTED, IN ORDER OF OPENING REMARKS
Craig Kennedy has been the President of the German Marshall Fund of the United States since 1995. He is an expert on transatlantic relations, governance, and public opinion.
Kati Suominen is a GMF Transatlantic Fellow focusing on International Economics, Trade, and Emerging Markets. For several years, Suominen has worked as International Trade Specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, and has been widely quoted in the media on economic issues.
Karen Donfried is the Executive Vice President of GMF, providing strategic direction to GMF's programs on transatlantic relations. Previously, Donfried was at the U.S. Department of State handling the Europe portfolio on the Policy Planning Staff. She is an expert on transatlantic relations, the European Union, NATO, and German politics.
Ian Lesser is a Senior Transatlantic Fellow at GMF with particular expertise on Turkey, the U.S.-Turkey-EU triangle, strategies toward North Africa and the Mediterranean, and transatlantic cooperation on new security and public policy challenges.
