Protecting Consumers’ Privacy in the Digital Age April 22, 2013 / Brussels, Belgium

On April 18, the Young Transatlantic Network in Brussels hosted a luncheon roundtable discussion with Julie Brill, Commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission of the United States. Commissioner Brill gave an overview of the Federal Trade Commission’s functions and the state of play of consumer protection in the United States. After her overview, a lively and engaging discussion with 25 young professionals from the European institutions, business associations, and think tanks took place. The discussion focused on issues such as the balancing act of aligning the use of personal data as a key economic asset in a digitalized society, with protecting individual freedoms and privacy. Other topics discussed included perceptions of privacy and consumer protection, the tension between the 'right-to-know' and the 'right-to-be-forgotten, and the question of whether or not policy makers have sufficiently kept up with the pace of technological advancements. The discussion also touched on the question of scalability, i.e. a balanced framing of commercial and privacy interests and the need to find suitable policy solutions.
