Russia, Afghanistan panels from Bucharest Conference featured in three-part radio series June 07, 2008 / Bucharest
From April 1-3, GMF held the Bucharest Conference, a three day gathering with panel discussions featuring leaders surrounding the role of NATO in the international community. The conference was held alongside the official 2008 NATO Summit in Bucharest and provided a forum for leading policymakers, opinion leaders, scholars, and business people from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the most pressing issues facing NATO and the international community. From June 7-21, NPR Berlin broadcasted two panels from the conference in a three-part series.

The first panel examines the topic of, "Russia on the Rise, What Impact for NATO?" which included Sergei Markov, a former Russian Duma member, and Mikhail Kasyanov, the former Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, as well as U.K. Shadow Security Minister Pauline Neville-Jones and Georgetown University's Angela Stent, Director of the school's Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies. The group focused on Russia's influence on the partnership, but also on the then-upcoming Russian presidential election. Chatham House's Robin Shepherd moderated.
The second included Afghan President Hamid Karzai, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper discussing "NATO in Afghanistan." The discussants gave their views on the success in the country and what it will take to ensure security for the Afghan people. BBC World's Lyse Doucet moderated.
