Still with Us: The Global War on Terror 10 Years After 9/11 September 07, 2011 / Berlin

On September 7, the German Marshall Fund, in partnership with the Bertelsmann Foundation and the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, hosted former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the Honorable Dennis Hastert and former U.S. Secretary for Homeland Security, the Honorable Michael Chertoff, for an evening discussion in Berlin commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  Chertoff and Hastert were crucial decision-makers during and after the attacks on New York and Washington DC.  Throughout the event, they looked back on a decade that saw not only a sharp turn in U.S. foreign policy, but also the most far-reaching reorganization of the U.S. government since the Second World War, and the passing of key legislation like the PATRIOT Act. Both stressed that close transatlantic cooperation had been indispensable in the fight against international terrorism. Looking ahead, Hastert and Chertoff highlighted the importance of robust foreign policy and international engagement for ensuring security in the transatlantic area and beyond.  Christiane Meier, Berlin Correspondent and former Bureau Chief of ARD in Washington DC, moderated the discussion.
