SWP researchers present book on the Economic Burden of World Order October 25, 2006 / Berlin

On October 25, 2006, GMF hosted Jens van Scherpenberg from Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, a German institute for international politics and security, in Berlin to present, "Sharing the Economic Burden of World Order" (click on the title to see a PDF of the book). The booklet brought together economists and political scientists to analyze the relationship between global security and economic performance, especially the question of whether the United States could continue its current role as dominant power if its economic performance (seen from the perspective of current account deficits) was becoming more fragile, at the same time Europe is hindered by its structural rigidities from its welfare system.

Van Scherpenberg presented with Henry Nau of George Washington University, who gave a presentation arguing that the current situation may actually benefit both sides of the transatlantic relationship, while current account deficits accounted for only one aspect of U.S. economic performance.  A very lively and thoughtful discussion ensued, with the participation and presence of the Ambassadors of Malta, Norway, and Luxembourg.
