TANGO across a Closed Border January 20, 2011 / Istanbul, Turkey

On January 20, The Turkish Armenian NGO Network, a Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation grantee, launched a new website to facilitate partnerships and promote civil society collaboration between the two countries.  The website launch took place at Istanbul’s Kadir Has University, and was attended by NGO representatives from Turkey and Armenia, academics, diplomatic missions, donor organizations, and GMF President Craig Kennedy.

Otherwise known as TANGO, the network’s activities help enable both Turkish and Armenian governments to better understand the situation of their societies through track two initiatives at the cultural, economic and governmental levels.  While political efforts to bring about reconciliation between Turkey and Armenia are currently stymied, TANGO’s unique focus on bringing together NGOs from the two countries means that existing political differences can be transcended.

TANGO’s existence sprung from the solid partnership between the Corporate Social Responsibility Association of Turkey and the Armenian Marketing Association, the two organizations responsible for implementing the project.

The new website for the TANGO network can be found at: http://www.tangonetwork.org/

The project is supported by GMF’s Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation (BST), which promotes regional cooperation and good governance in the Wider Black Sea region; accountable, transparent, and open governments; strong, effective civic sectors; and independent and professional media.
