The Lisbon Treaty: Implications for Future Relations Between the European Union and the United States December 15, 2009
GMF Executive Vice President Karen Donfried testified Tuesday, December 15, before the Subcommittee on Europe of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs. Her testimony addressed the Lisbon Treaty and the implications on transatlantic relations.
In her testimony, Donfried offered two suggestions for how the Obama administration can support the development of a strong European Union. First, she said, President Barack Obama could visit Brussels in early 2010 to show support for the EU and its new, post-Lisbon Treaty architecture. Second, the administration could press for further EU civilian engagement in Afghanistan.
