The U.S.-EU High-Level Development Dialogue: Building on the Legacy of the Marshall Plan June 27, 2011 / Washington, DC
On June 27, the German Marshall Fund’s Economics Policy Program launched a policy brief by G. William Anderson, “The U.S.-EU High-Level Development Dialogue: Building on the Legacy of the Marshall Plan.” Anderson, a professor of practice at the Virginia Tech School of Public and International Affairs and former longtime USAID foreign service officer, was involved in revitalizing this strategic dialogue in 2009 and sees it as an opportunity for truly effective and catalytic transatlantic cooperation on development in several key areas, including food security, aid effectiveness principles, and the security-development nexus.
Anderson spoke at a public breakfast event at GMF’s offices, moderated by GMF Senior Transatlantic Fellow Jim Kolbe and with Steven Pierce, senior advisor and special assistant to the administrator at USAID, serving as respondent. Later in the day, Anderson met with congressional staffers from both sides of the aisle to discuss Congress’ role in increasing cooperation with Europe, particularly important at a time of constrained foreign aid budgets.
