Transatlantic spotlight on Berlin: the double presidency December 21, 2006 / Berlin

A Series on Germany's 2007 EU/G8 Presidency, Sept. 2006 - June 2007

GMF Berlin has held four events as part of its series highlighting the 2007 German double presidencies of the G8 and the EU. The German presidencies play a crucial role in several issues relevant to the future development of Europe and the transatlantic relationship: tackling the EU's institutional crisis; coming to terms with future rounds of enlargement (for example, the Western Balkans and Turkey); developing a new European neighborhood strategy; finding the right balance between energy security needs and promoting democratic political values in relations with the South Caucasus; the search for peace and stability in the Greater Middle East; and Russia.

On November 2 and 3, GMF Berlin hosted the first event, a workshop, in its EU/G8 Series, in cooperation with GMF's Foreign Policy Progran, AEI, and Freedom House. This workshop focused on democracy promotion and looked at how to deal with countries when they elect leaders that do not necessarily help promote democracy.

The second event in the series, organized with GMF's Ankara office and held on November 7, looked at Turkey's foreign policy orientation in light of recent domestic and regional developments. Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Turkey's foreign policy environment has changed drastically.

The third event, organized with GMF's Belgrade office on November 15 and 16, looked at Kosovo's future and Serbia's westward path and highlighted post-intervention democracy promotion in the Balkans.

For the final event of 2006, on December 12 and 13, GMF Berlin hosted an event together with the GMF Bratislava office titled "It's Not Your Dad's Europe Anymore." The workshop focused on how new EU member countries integrate themselves into the new Europe.

GMF Berlin has more events in this series planned for 2007: "A Transatlantic Ostpolitik" (with the GMF Brussels office and the Draeger Stiftung, Lübeck), "Europe's Here - But Where is France?" (with the GMF Paris office), and "Getting Beyond Zero-Sum Games at the G8" (with the GMF Economics Program and the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft).
