Turks, Europeans debate Turkey’s EU process February 22, 2006 / Ankara, Istanbul
Over two days in two cities, GMF's Ankara office hosted its latest Ankara Speaker Series event, this time on Turkey's negotiation and accession process to the European Union.
Nathalie Tocci from the European University Institute in Florence and Borut Grgic from the Institute for Strategic Studies in Ljubjana were the key speakers. One of Tocci's principal messages was that Turkey needs to allow the negotiation process to continue. She noted that, by nature, the negotation process is technical and low-key, adding that this was a good thing.
In Istanbul, 50 people from the media, academic, and NGO communities turned out for the panel on "Turkey and Europe: Is There a Common Future?" Grgic's presentation focused on Central and Eastern European perceptions vis-a-vis Turkey's EU drive and the role energy security plays in this regard. Grgic underlined that Turkey could become much more attractive to Central and Eastern Europeans if it would serve a significant role in Europe's quest to diversify its energy imports. Tocci said that the EU's Cyprus policy was misguided and has damaged the EU's credibility in Turkey. Tocci added that European leaders did not try to convince their publics about Turkey's EU aspirations.
